Our Story

It all started with a candle - a very tall candle. As an event designer in London, our founder Jessica Lucas was a magpie when it came to sourcing the unusual and one of a kind - so when a friend spotted a pair of towering church candles for sale in Madrid, they were too perfect a gift to leave behind (even if they wouldn’t fit in her suitcase).

Set amongst tumbling flowers on sweeping tables, they would be breathtaking. Stretching halfway to the ceiling in Lucas’ own living room, they turned a night on the sofa with a takeaway into a moment. There was just one problem: she only had two of them.

And so began a two and a half year hunt to source candles on a grand scale - and when she couldn’t, to find the artisans who would be able to make them.

Now, all of our candles are poured by hand, using 100% natural and vegan palm kernel wax for the cleanest burn at home. Our wax is certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), which oversees workers rights, forest management, and the supply chain. After pouring over vintage paint swatches and Japanese colour sheets, we created 15 signature colours, from understated classics to unexpected, irreverent bolts of bright pigment.

And while they’re all tall (when it comes to our candles, size matters), we make them in three different heights, stretching up to the signature METRE - because a cosy cottage ceiling shouldn’t get in the way of a good time.

Metre candles aren’t just for grand events, or even grand rooms. As a student, Jessica’s favourite little luxury was a single hydrangea, wrapped in paper and tied with a bow at the florist, a bright spot of beauty in her bedroom. Metre candles were created to find that magic in the everyday, to create moments wherever you light them.

“It became a tradition, whenever my student loan landed into my bank account I would get all dressed up and bolt into central London feeling like a millionaire. I would do two things; 1. Eyelash extensions (it wasn’t a good look) and 2. Buy a single stem of hydrangea from my favourite florist.

That hydrangea was wrapped in paper, swathed in cellophane, and adorned with their ultra-chic branded silk ribbon which would later be transferred to my lamp stand. The florist would place the hydrangea in a gigantic bag, take my £10 and send me, my eyelashes and my gigantic bag away, looking like we’d just dropped some serious cash and feeling on top of the world.

I chose the hydrangea because it’s big, bold and lasts the longest. Size matters! I loved how it felt to buy it, unwrap it and display it; owning it made me feel special. I created METRE Candles with that magic in mind. Whoever you are, whatever your reason, sometimes everyone just needs a moment to own something special.”
